Individual and Group Coaching Sessions of the Mind Nutrition Study Have Begun!

The Mind Nutrition study focuses on examining whether nutritional counseling can alleviate symptoms of depression among practical nurses, registered nurses, and social workers, as well as improve their work ability and quality of life. Professionals working in mental health and substance abuse services, as well as in psychiatric care, are at a higher risk of experiencing depressive symptoms compared to many other occupational groups.

The study includes both individual and group counseling. Participants have been recruited from mental health and substance abuse services in the Pori region of the Satakunta Wellbeing Services County. Recruitment took place last year, and participants were randomly assigned to either the intervention group or the control group. The intervention group will receive comprehensive nutritional counseling over six months, while the control group will also receive nutritional guidance after the final assessments.

Individual and Group Counseling Launched at the Beginning of the Year

The study is designed to include both individual and group-based counseling. In the first phase, participants complete a three-day food diary, based on which an individualized nutrition plan is created for them. This plan includes all essential nutrients and serves as the foundation for dietary changes.

− Changes must be small and realistic enough to be achievable, considering each person’s own resources, emphasizes the study’s nutrition expert, Elina Nevala.

After the individual counseling phase, group sessions will begin in February. Participants will meet in small groups three times during the spring. In April, a second individual coaching session will be held to review progress and adjust personal goals as needed. The aim of the group sessions is to provide peer support and deepen the understanding of the connection between nutrition and mental well-being. Participants will also receive a workbook containing exercises and key insights on the topic.

The Role of Nutrition in Mental Health

Nutrition plays a crucial role in supporting mental health, but its potential is still underutilized. Nevala points out that research on the connection between diet and mental well-being is still relatively scarce. The Mind Nutrition study aims to generate new knowledge on how nutrition can be used in the treatment and prevention of mental health issues.

A poor-quality diet can reduce energy levels, and certain nutrients have been found to be linked to mood and depression. Nevala hopes that the study will help answer an important question:Does poor nutrition contribute to mental health challenges, or do mental health issues affect dietary quality?

Elina Nevala joined the study at the end of last year, bringing her expertise from both occupational health and the public sector. She serves as a coach and support for the study participants, providing knowledge and practical skills to help integrate healthy nutrition into daily life. Additionally, she contributes to the development of study materials and scientific publications.

− I’ve been interested in the connection between mental well-being and diet since my studies, so being part of this research is truly fascinating. Moreover, my role in the study is diverse, which brings a refreshing variety to my workdays.

The Mind Nutrition study offers a unique opportunity to expand knowledge and understanding of the relationship between nutrition and mental well-being. We warmly welcome you to learn more about the study!
